Jon Van Eck teaches our Wednesday evening Intro class. He is an Ann Arbor-based artist who began his life-long love affair with ceramics in 1982. He became a member of the Ann Arbor Potters Guild in 1987, but left in 1990 to raise five kids, work, and go to school. He received a BFA in Ceramics from Eastern Michigan University, and as a graduate teaching assistant taught the “Ceramics for Non-Majors” course for two semesters. Jon set up a home studio and created Van Eck Pottery & Tile Works in 2005. In 2015 & 2016, he taught workshops at the Ann Arbor Potters Guild on making extruded ceramic dies and combining extrusions with thrown objects. Jon currently teaches at two studios: the Ann Arbor Art Center where he began teaching in June of 2018, and the Village Potters Guild in Plymouth, where he started teaching in the fall of 2021. Savanah Conrad teaches our Tuesday evening Wheel Thrown Pottery class. An artist based out of Ann Arbor, Michigan, she has been exploring the relationship between form and geometric patterns on wheel thrown functional and decorative ceramics for the past several years. She has been focusing on art full time since October 2023, after working as a QA software engineer for four years, and before that earning a B.S. in biology from St. Michael’s College in Vermont. In addition to geometric patterns, some of her work also features illustrations of flora, fauna, and funga drawn from her upbringing in New England and her love of forests, ponds, and the small creatures living within.
